These distinct and independent pieces act as short musical studies, exploring various configurations of the modern wind quintet, while looking back at the music of several composers whom I admire. The first piece, a glance at Kurtag and Debussy, revolves around a lulling rhythm, like someone fighting sleep. The second, a game of gesture and expectation, takes inspiration from the music of Ligeti and Hurel. The third is a study in bending and beating, inspired by La Monte Young, in which the quintet merges on a single pitch and gradually fans out into a cluster. Finally, the last piece contrasts a lumbering melodic loop with an ever-insistent accompaniment, fusing freely interpreted material from Messiaen with a process-like drive.
