Born in Calgary, Alberta, Jeffrey McCune recieved his Masters of Music degree in Composition at the University of Alberta in 1994. In 1988, he was one of three young Canadians chosen for the Special Program in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Toronto with Michel Tabachnik, an associate of Pierre Boulez and the late Herbert von Karajan. His music has been perfomed by the University of Toronto Women's chorus, the Claude Watson School of the Arts Orchesta, The Edmonton Symphony, and The Toronto Symphone, as well as radio broadcasts throughout North America and Europe. Competition awards have included first place prized in the Canadian Contemporary Music Workshop, and Arraymusic's Young Composer's Competition. His Two Etudes for Organ, Brass Trio and Red Hills and Blue Sky: Hommage to Georgia O'Keefe have been recorded by CBC in previous Edmonton New Music Festivals and events for national and provincial broadcasts. Featured performances have included the European premiere of Two Etudes for Organ in Warsaw and Legnica Poland; the American premiere of Three Spanish Songs in New York city; and the world premiere of Dance Suite for Orchestra performed by both the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Recent performances have included the world premiere of the CBC commissioned work The Painter Suite written for Edmonton's Hammerhead Consort, and the world premiere of an orchestral work entitled Overture Sauvage, commissioned by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Upcoming performances of commissioned works include a new choral work for Edmonton's Pro Coro choir in January 1999, entitled Sea of Dreams (Mare Somniorum), A Lunar Motet for Piano and Mixed Chorus; a new composition for Organ and Piano duet, also for 1999, and a new Opera commissioned by the Edmonton Opera Association through the Millenium Project Foundation. Jeff McCune is presently Artistic Administrator for the Edmonton Opera Association; his works appear on Edmonton's CLEF Records and Arktos labels.
