Karen Sunabacka is a composer, cellist and music theorist currently living in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, but with deep roots in Manitoba. In demand as a composer she enjoys the challenge of composing, teaching, performing, travelling, and keeping up with the latest science fiction and fantasy book, film, or tv series. In October 2019 she had three major premiers: English Horn Concerto: In Memory of Beverly Clouston, commissioned and premiered by the Orchestre Métropolitain with Alondra de la Parra conducting, a duo titled I Wasn’t Meant for this commissioned and premiered by Park Sounds (viola d’amore and percussion), and a piece for viola and cello titled Ripples, commissioned, recorded and premiered by Ames Asbell and Karla Hamelin based at Texas State University. Other recent commissions include: Gloria (2020) for SATB choir commissioned and premiered by the Winnipeg Singers; #DryColdConversations (2018) commissioned and premiered for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra; and We all Sing (2018) for choir, optional instruments, and audience, commissioned and premiered by Conrad Grebel University College. Along with pieces about the natural beauty of the Prairies, Karen has recently been exploring her Métis and Manitoba heritage through her mother’s prose (Joyce Clouston). She’s written pieces about her Métis Grandmother (Lenore Clouston), her aunt Beverly Clouston and her great-great Grandmother Mathilda. She is currently an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
