Compositeur, chef d'orchestre et pianiste canadien d'origine argentine, alcides lanza est né à Rosario en 1929. Une bourse de la Fondation Guggenheim lui facilita un séjour à New York de 1965 à 1971; pendant cette période, il travailla au Centre de musique électronique Columbia-Princeton. En 1971, il fut nommé professeur de composition à la Faculté de Musique de l'Université McGill, à Montréal, où il occupe depuis 1974 le poste de directeur du Studio de musique électronique. Il est maintenant Directeur Emeritus du EMS de McGill.

alcides lanza poursuit une carrière internationale très active comme pianiste et chef d'orchestre, se spécialisant dans le répertoire d'avant-garde. Ses programmes reflètent l'intérêt particulier qu'il porte à la musique des trois Amériques. En 1987 et 1992, alcides lanza s'est produit à deux reprises dans des Marathons de piano qui se déroulèrent à la salle Pollack de l'Université McGill. Lors du Marathon de 1992, il exécuta, sans interruption aucune, un nombre total de 48 pièces pour piano, électronique et film, le tout d'une durée de cinq heures.

En 1996, l'Organisation des États Américains et le Conseil interaméricain de musique lui ont décerné le Diplôme d'honneur avec très grande distinction pour sa promotion de la musique des Amériques.

En 2015, alcides lanza reçu le Prix Tomás Luis de Victoria pour sa promotion de la musique des Amériques et sa carriére comme compositeur et enseignant.

En 2020 alcides lanza reçu l'Ordre du Canada pour sa promotion magnifique de la musique canadienne.

English Biography

Canadian-Argentinian composer, conductor and pianist born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1929. He moved to New York in 1965, having received a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship and lived there from 1965 until 1971 where he worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. In 1971 he was appointed professor of composition at the Faculty of Music, McGill University in Montreal. Since 1974 he has been the director of the Electronic Music Studio at McGill. alcides lanza is now the EMS Director Emeritus.

lanza continues to have a very active international career as a pianist and conductor specializing in the avant garde repertoire. His programs reflect his particular interest in the music of the three Americas. lanza has performed Piano Marathons at Pollack Hall in Montreal, in 1987 and 1992. This last featured lanza performing for five hours - non-stop - and included 48 different pieces for piano, electronics and film.

In 1996 the Organization of American States and the InterAmerican Music Council gave him an Honor Diploma with Distinction for his dedication to the promotion of the Music of the Three Americas.

In 2015, the SGAE Foundation [Spain] awarded alcides lanza the Tomás Luis de VIctoria Prize recognizing his outstanding contribution as a composer and for his remarkable promotion of the music from Ibero-America.

In 2020 alcides lanza has received the Order of Canada recognizing his contribution to Canadian music.
