Katya Pine’s multi-ethnic background gives her an appreciation for all styles of musical expression. Her music education extends from piano, to violin, African drumming and sitar, studying with members of Nexus and disciples of Ravi Shankar. A Dean’s List Scholar, Katya’s degree in Musical Composition is from the University of Toronto, instructed by John Beckwith and John Weinzweig. Post-graduate she received the prestigious Chalmers Award, completed composition studies with composer Charles Camilleri in London, England, and studied Jazz and Contemporary Music at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta.
Katya has written music for the concert stage, musical theatre, jazz venues, radio, television, independent film, documentary film and opera; participated in orchestration workshops through the Screen Guild Composers of Canada; and created new operatic works via Tapestry Theatre’s LibLab workshops.
She writes extensively for voice. Her unique song cycle, “A Salutation to Life”, for soprano, piano, sitar and tambura, was performed and broadcast on CBC Radio's, Music Toronto. Her song cycles, “The Garden Going on Without Us” and “Wild Birds”, composed to the words of Order of Canada poet, Lorna Crozier; and “A Piece of Alligator Pie”, a whimsical song cycle set to the words of Canadian poet, Dennis Lee; are featured on her newly released CD, “Taking Flight”.
Selected works are listed with the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Canadian National Conservatory of Music and are included in a number of publications. Katya has taught at the Toronto Film School and now has a successful private teaching practice in Surrey, B.C.
