John McPherson has been a multi-faceted professional musician for over 40 years who is increasingly making his mark as a notable Canadian composer. He is the most recent Composer-in-Residence of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and has been commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, I Musici de Montréal, Edmonton Recital Society, Grand Prairie College among others. John has received grants from Canada Council for the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, City of Edmonton, and Edmonton Arts Council. Performers of his works include TSO, ESO, I Musici de Montréal, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Mark Fewer, Robert Uchida, Caroline Stinson, William Eddins, Lidia Khaner, Hammerhead Consort, NOWage Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton, and the Debut, Beau, Polyphonie, and XIA string quartets. A native of Edmonton, John was a student of composer/trombonist Malcolm Forsyth. Prior to his position as Principal Trombone of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, he played with the Toronto Symphony, Hamilton Philharmonic, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, and Canadian Chamber Ensemble. Active as an educator, John recently designed an educational outreach project for students in Fort McMurray and continues to be part of the ESO’s Young Composer Project, Adopt-a-Player program, Parkinson Project, and YONA (the ESO’s Sistema program). He has led workshops in composition and improvisation for students, teachers, and professionals; has been a clinician and adjudicator for music festivals; and was the low brass instructor at the University of Alberta’s Department of Music.
