Carol Ann Weaver is a celebrated Canadian composer whose music is heard live and on CBC (and other radio) throughout North America, Europe, Africa, South Korea and Paraguay. Her genre-bending music ranges from classical to jazz, folk, world, creating new fusions of art and roots music, often colored by her passion for African music. She composes vocal, choral, chamber, solo, orchestral, multimedia music, works with electric instruments, dancers, turntablist, gamelan, drum circles, incorporating visuals, electroacoustic and soundscape textures. Her music is described as “adventurous, imaginative, passionately connected with the earth.” Commissioned by Arraymusic, Blue Rider Ensemble, Hemispheres Orchestra, Ardeleana Trio, Gallery Players, Cincinnati Arts Festival, Music at Sharon, Fifth Stream Music Festival, Indi 85 Dance Festival, and more, she received grants from Canada, Manitoba and Ontario Arts Councils.
Her seven CDs – about struggle, hope and the environment – also include her as pianist: PARAGUAY PRIMEVAL 2012, EVERY 3 CHILDREN 2007, THISTLE & JEWEL 2006, AWAKENINGS 2003 (with Rebecca Campbell), DANCING RIVERS – FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO CANADA, 2001, JOURNEY BEGUN 1999 and DAUGHTER OF OLAPA 1996.
She is Chair of Association of Canadian Women Composers, Secretary of Canadian Association of Sound Ecology, and director of Sound in the Land Festival/Conferences which attract international attention. As Professor Emerita of Conrad Grebel University College/University of Waterloo, she previously taught at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canadian Mennonite University, and Eastern Mennonite University (USA). For her DM in Composition at Indiana University, she studied with Bernard Heiden, John Eaton and Juan Orego-Salas and pianist Gyorgy Sebok.
