Originaire de Montréal, Giancarlo Scalia est très actif comme pianiste, coach vocal et compositeur. Il a été directeur musical ou répétiteur pour plusieurs compagnies dont Opéra immédiat (Chauve-Souris, Carmen, Aïda, l’Elisir d’amore, I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Don Pasquale), l’Opéra bouffe du Québec (Les Brigands, Véronique, Le Baron tzigane, Le Chanteur de Mexico, La Fille du tambour-major, La Belle de Cadix) et le Halifax Summer Opera Festival (Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, Carmen, Don Giovanni, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Armide, La Jolie Parfumeuse) ainsi que pour Contact Theatre (Next to Normal, Reefer Madness), Lakeshore Light Opera (The Mikado, Thespis, Iolanthe, The Gondoliers), Light Opera of Montreal (The Tender Land, Sweeney Todd), Snowglobe Theatre (The Medium, Riders to the Sea), Haskell Opera House (La Traviata), OperAmore (Don Giovanni), Opéra Outside the Box (Le Téléphone), le Festival Classica et l’atelier d’opérette de l’École de musique Vincent d’Indy. Il s’est produit en tant que pianiste collaborateur un peu partout au Canada ainsi qu’en France, Autriche, Allemagne, Italie, les États-Unis et la Chine et il a collaboré avec l’Opéra de Montréal et son Atelier lyrique, Mediterranean Opera Festival en Sicile, Opéra de Lévis, Opera Atelier à Toronto, Gesellschaft für Musiktheater à Vienne, les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques, l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura de Montréal, la Semaine italienne de Montréal et la Société d’art vocal de Montréal. Compositeur agréé du Centre de musique canadienne, il a composé pour divers solistes et ensembles (l’Orchestre de la Francophonie, l'Ensemble Paramirabo, l’Ensemble Saxologie, l’Académie Francis Poulenc à Tours, le pianiste Jimmy Brière, la soprano Sophie De Cruz, la mezzo-soprano Rose Naggar-Tremblay, la violoncelliste Julie Hereish, l’Orchestre symphonique des jeunes du West Island, l’Orchestre d'Harmonie Leonardo da Vinci) et ses œuvres ont été jouées au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. Il a obtenu un Baccalauréat et un DESS en interprétation piano sous la direction de Jimmy Brière et Marc Durand et une Maîtrise en composition instrumentale sous la direction de Denis Gougeon à l’Université de Montréal avant de poursuivre ses études en privé avec les pianistes Walter Moore et Norman Shetler à Vienne et Claude Webster à Montréal. Il a également participé aux programmesd’accompagnement vocal du Centre d’arts Orford, le Wiener Musikseminar à Vienne, Vox Musicae à Senigallia et COSI à Sulmona (La bohème).
Born in Montreal, Giancarlo Scalia is very active as a pianist, vocal coach and composer. He has performed as a collaborative pianist throughout Canada as well as in France, Austria, Germany, Italy, the United States and China and has collaborated with Opéra de Montréal and it’s Atelier lyrique, the Mediterranean Opera Festival in Sicily, Opéra de Lévis, Opera Atelier in Toronto, Gesellschaft für Musiktheater in Vienna, les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques, l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura de Montreal, la Semaine italienne de Montréal and the Société d’art vocal de Montréal. Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, he has composed for various soloists and ensembles (Orchestre de la Francophonie, Ensemble Paramirabo, Ensemble Saxologie, the Académie Francis Poulenc in Tours, pianist Jimmy Brière, soprano Sophie De Cruz, mezzo soprano Rose Naggar-Tremblay, cellist Julie Hereish, the West Island Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre d'Harmonie Leonardo da Vinci) and his works have been performed in Canada, the United States and Europe. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree and a DESS in piano performance under the direction of Jimmy Brière and Marc Durand and a Master’s degree in composition under the direction of Denis Gougeon from the Université de Montréal before pursuing his studies privately with pianists Walter Moore and Norman Shetler in Vienna and Claude Webster in Montréal. He has also participated in vocal accompaniment programs at the Orford Arts Centre, the Wiener Musikseminar in Vienna, Vox Musicae in Senigallia and COSI in Sulmona (La bohème).
