Emily Hall completed undergraduate studies in both piano performance and composition at Mount Allison University, where she directed 24 musicians performing her chamber and vocal music (1999). Here, she displayed her interest in multiple forms of expression, including lighting design, costume design and video projection.
She holds a Master’s degree in composition from McGill University, studying with Jean Lesage, Denys Bouliane, and John Rea. Her thesis, "Inside is the Sky", for chamber orchestra and mezzo-soprano, is based on texts by renowned Canadian poet Lorna Crozier and garnered a second prize in the Godfrey Ridout Awards of the SOCAN Foundation, 2005. The following year, she won in the same category for her choir work, "Curious Rêve".
In 2002, Hall was the composer for the McGill-Concordia New Directions in Chamber Music project funded by Fonds Québécois de la Recherche sur la Société et la Culture. The multidisciplinary research involved musicians, computer programmers, writers, and digital artists. She continued with the 2003-2004 edition, culminating in a twenty-five minute music drama for soprano, percussion, and hexaphonic audio which was premiered at Montreal’s Jusqu’aux Oreilles New Music Festival 2004.
Hall’s music has been performed in Canada by numerous performers and presenters including Quatuor Bozzini, ARRAYMUSIC, Ensemble Synapse, Viva Voce, the McGill Percussion Ensemble, GEMS, Julieanne Klein, Marie-Hélène Breault, Catherine Meunier, and Kinza Tyrrell. Hall’s music has been broadcast on CBC/SRC Radio Canada. She makes her European début October 2006 with a three-month Artist Residency in Switzerland.
