Born in England in 1959, Composer Nic Gotham spent most of his life in Canada, moving to Riga, Latvia in 1998 and returning to Toronto in 2012. He studied at York University, Toronto, where his teachers included David Mott and James Tenney. He taught at the Latvian Academy of Music and in 2012 was awarded a PhD in music composition research from Brunel University, London, UK where his thesis supervisor was Christopher Fox. Also a performer on saxophone and was professionally active since 1982, he worked in a wide range of musical styles including jazz, pop, free improvisation, contemporary concert music and opera.
Nic Gotham composed some fifty works for various ensembles including chamber, choral and orchestral music and two chamber operas. Some performers who have commissioned music by Nic Gotham are: Tapestry New Opera, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Arraymusic, Riga Saxophone Quartet, the Latvian Radio Choir, Evergreen Club Gamelan, Sinfonietta Riga and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. His chamber opera Nigredo Hotel (1992), created with librettist Ann-Marie MacDonald, has been one of the most frequently performed Canadian operas with several productions, tours across Canada and to Great Britain and a recent production by Stopera (Canberra, Australia) while a second chamber opera Oh Pilot (2004) has been presented in Riga and Kaunas, Lithuania. A chamber symphony Nightscapes was commissioned by Sinfonietta Riga and premièred in April, 2012.
