“Cimbalom” is dedicated to the Latvian pianist Diāna Zandberga It was composed for Ms. Zandberga’s 2013 concert series “Landscapes of Hungarian and Latvian Piano Music”, presented by The Embassy of Hungary and the Latvian Composers’ Union. To imitate the characteristic sound of a Hungarian folk instrument – the cimbalom, this composition, in conjunction with unconventional techniques used directly on the strings of the piano, employs Hungarian scales, harmonies, and singularily characteristic melodic tunes.
