John Abram was born in England in 1959. After composition studies at Keele University with Roger Marsh and Peter Dickinson he moved to Canada in 1984 to complete a PhD at the University of Victoria with Rudolf Komorous (composition) and Doug Collinge (electroacoustic music). From 1986 to 1988 he was Associate Director and Conductor of the Open Space New Music Series at the Open Space Gallery. Living in Toronto from 1989 to 1994, he co-founded The Drystone Orchestra and was a member of ARCANA, also performing with ARRAYMUSIC, Strange Companions and others. From 1994-2008 he lived in Calgary and was on the teaching staff at Mount Royal University, and ran the Technology Lab there. He continues to engineer and produce MRU's larger recording projects. He was Artistic Director of Neworks Calgary and produced many concerts of Albertan, Canadian and International artists over a seven-year period. John has also been active in film and multimedia work - recent collaborators include Marla Hlady, Gary Burns, Barbara Sutherland and Chris Myhr.
John's music has been heard around the world, performed by Guido Arbonelli, Arcana, Arraymusic, Brandon Chamber Players, The Burdocks, Concentus Corvinus, Continuum, Les Coucous Bénévoles, The Drystone Orchestra, Eve Egoyan, Electra, Interensemble, Rosa Selvatica, George W. Welch, Windsor Symphony Orchestra and others.
John Abram est né en Angleterre en 1959. Après ses études de composition à l’Université Keele avec Roger Marsh et Peter Dickinson, il s’est établi au Canada en 1984 pour terminer un Ph.D. à l’Université de Victoria sous la direction de Rudolf Komorous (composition) et de Doug Collinge (musique électroacoustique). De 1986 à 1988, il a été directeur adjoint et chef d’orchestre de l’Open Space New Music Series à l’Open Space Gallery. À Toronto, où il a vécu de 1989 à 1994, il a été le cofondateur de The Drystone Orchestra et membre d’ARCANA en plus de jouer au sein des ensembles ARRAYMUSIC, Strange Companions et plusieurs autres. De 1994 à 2008, il a résidé à Calgary et enseigné à la Mount Royal University dont il a dirigé le Technology Lab. Il continue d’assumer le travail d’ingénierie et la réalisation des projets d’enregistrement importants à la Mount Royal University. À titre de directeur artistique de Networks Calgary, il a organisé pendant sept ans de nombreux concerts d’artistes albertains, canadiens et internationaux. Dans les domaines du cinéma et du multimédia, il a collaboré récemment avec Marla Hlady, Gary Burns, Barbara Sutherland et Chris Myhr. Il vit actuellement à Dartmouth, en Nouvelle-Écosse.
